Carlyle House Cafe

The Jane Welsh Carlyle house in Haddington used to be a museum, dedicated to the life of its most famous resident – Jane Welsh, lady of letters, who married Thomas Carlyle, the historian and philosopher in 1826.

Now it has been reincarnated as a wonderful café, restaurant and private dining room. Opened in October 2018, the emphasis is on cooking real food from basic ingredients. That means that the dishes and food combinations are created from scratch, and rely on imaginative and skilful cooking.

Fresh produce, locally-sourced where appropriate is used wherever possible. Above all, the cafe employs talented and passionate cooks, who concentrate on preparing high quality dishes with true, unfussy, and fresh flavours.

The café is friendly and informal and the whole experience of eating and drinking should is fun and relaxed – a vehicle for socialising, rather than an end in itself.
